Camping During a Thunderstorm?

Wet, muddy, hot and dreary; that describes my camping experience over the Labour Day long weekend.
Every long weekend from May 2-4 until Labour Day my Mom’s side of the family gets together to camp at a central campground in Byng (just outside of Dunnville).  This year, my girlfriend and I were able to make it down for Saturday night and Sunday.  While Saturday was a pretty good day, it turned terrible very quickly at about 4am!
A storm that had been on the horizon for many hours during the evening on Saturday decided it would wake most of us up with its fury. Thunder rolled, lightning lit up the sky, winds blew dinning tents across the campground and rain, much to our dislike, came down hard enough to seep into our small 7ftX7ft tent.
Now, I’ll let you know that about 90% of my family that comes camping owns either a pop-up tent trailer or a luxurious motor home.  But me…not so much. I’m  forced to resort to tent camping and although I do enjoy it through thunderstorms and calm night alike, it’s not all that desirable!
Fortunately, we were about to squeeze into a safe retreat for the rest of the night but immediately on Sunday, we checked the weather forecast and decided against staying another night!
It’s just not as fun as an experience when all your clothes are SOAKED including pillows and blankets and everyone just doesn’t have the same attitude anymore.
But if you ask me if I’ll be camping again next year, regardless of the weather, my answer will still be yes!
Tell me about your best/worst camping experience.
Cheers,
